Review of Nikon 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G AF-S DX VR Nikkor Zoom Lens

March 31, 2010

I have the original 18-55mm AF-S DX which came with my D40 kit and love it – it weighs nothing, performs brilliantly, and focuses so close that I can use it as a macro if I want.I decided to get this since I do quite a bit of indoor photography without flash, and wanted some extra stability in low-light, longer-shutter speed situations from the Vibration Reduction which I have on my 18-200mm VR but don’t use on my D40 (I use that on my D300, and it almost never comes off). It’s performed brilliantly under such circumstances; I can get sharp shots at 1/20, 1/10 and even 1/8 if I’m really stable at the time of the shot – something I couldn’t reliably get from the non-VR version. It also helps in the long end (55mm) in uneven light and other times when the VR becomes necessary. In terms of sharpness, light falloff, distortion, and all the other metrics, this lens is as good as, or slightly better, than the original non-VR version. It is also a bit heavier and seems a bit more solid in construction, with a tighter zoom ring and differently-sculpted manual focus ring (with more recessed plastic indentations compared with the original model).I think the addition of VR makes it the perfect lens for the D40, D40x or newly-introduced D60, since its performance is so much better in all metrics and tests (particularly distortion and sharpness) than some of its would-be step-up replacements (i.e. the 18-135, the 24-120, etc.)

If you generally do lots of flash or outdoor photography, and don’t tend to experience slower shutter speeds due to lighting issues, or take most of your shots at the wider end of the scale (i.e. 18-25mm) this lens is probably an upgrade that you can either do with or without. In the end the investment is quite small for those few times that VR might save the shot, so I would get one.Granted, VR at this level (i.e not 200 or 300mm) is less about hand shake in daylight, but more about low lighting conditions and longer shutter speeds. As for some reviewer’s comments on the default lens speed, etc. – this is a $200 prosumer lens, not a $1,500 17-55mm pro wide-zoom with f/2.8 costing 8 times what this lens costs; for the money, you can’t get anything better for a Nikon with this kind of performance.

Additional notes:There is some clunking sound from the VR occasionally when focusing, and there is no hood or lens pouch included, but that’s less of an issue if, as most people do, you have a camera or lens bag, and as for the hood, I’ve never used one and never had a problem; if there’s sunglare, I can cup my hand around the lens (since it’s so light) and have no issues.I think some people use lens hoods to somehow show off that they’re “photographers” or “hobbyist-pros” rather than for the reduction of flare and glare when outside in bright sunlight (sometimes direct, etc.) or under sharp lighting.Honestly, I’ve seen guys taking indoor shots of artwork exhibits under soft lighting with the hood on.

Review of TechFuel® Travel Battery Charger for Nikon EN-EL3e Digital Camera

March 31, 2010

I bought this TechFuel because I wanted something easier to carry and use than the corded Nikon charger that comes stock with the D700.I like an all-in-one charger that I can plug right into the wall without having to deal with a lengthy, bulky cord. I ordered the TechFuel with some trepidation, not knowing either the brand or the retailer. So far, however, the gadget works perfectly, filling my Nikon-brand EN-EL3e batteries right to the brim.It doesn’t charge more quickly than the stock Nikon charger, but that may be good — many claim that fast chargers do a poor job of getting batteries to hold a full charge. Haven’t tried the in-car DC charger yet….

Review of Lowepro Nova 140 AW Camera Bag (Bordeaux Red)

March 31, 2010

I have an earlier model of this bag, it is years old, showing no signs of wear.I got a new camera, so of course I looked for a bag like the old one, and this is as close as I could get. This bag is made just as well as my other one, the color is a nice brown that is not overstated. The bag is large enough for a digital SLR, mine is a Nikon P90.It fits with room to spare, and has a divider for the main compartment that adjusts with velcro to keep the camera sitting snug. There are little pouches for memory cards, a place for a charger, it is an all in one place bag great for trips. It has a comfortable shoulder strap that is adjustable.I like this bag, and would recommend it to anyone with a medium size DSLR.

Product Description
Lowepro has updated its perennially successful Nova shoulder bag series to accommodate the most popular digital SLR cameras, lenses, memory cards and accessories.  This feature-rich series boasts improved attributes and innovations, including the newly-designed 360° All Weather Cover which allows you to keep the bag fully protected from the elements while in use, Memory Card pockets, cushioned grab-handle and an overlap lid that provides increased weather protection.

Review of Nikon Coolpix 4100 4MP Digital Camera with 3x Optical Zoom

March 31, 2010

The 4100 is an easy to use camera with several nice features that deliver better than expected results. It is perfect for vacations and parties, and most other personal uses. This is not a camera for photo enthusiast requiring lots of options and lots of zoom capability. Overall, it is a great bargain.

Pros:
- Priced a significant amount lower than competing models
- Very easy to use and intuitive menus
- Great picture quality (not excellent)
- Compact and solid, but not at the expense of usability
- Usefull scene and picture framing tools

Cons:
- The batteries won’t last more than twenty five pics w/flash
- The LCD display is not so great in sunlight
- The 3x optical zoom is only good enough for close objects and portrait shots (this is why it is not 5 stars)
- The digital zoom seriously sacrifices image quality

Product Description
The COOLPIX 4100 features 15 specially programmed modes to automatically handle focus, exposure, white balance and other adjustments that help you take great pictures at the press of a button. 4 of the 15 scene modes come with Scene Assist which offers a selection of easy framing assist options, to help you compose your pictures with the assistance of framing guides displayed in the monitor.

Review of Built E-SCS-SFS Scoop Camera Case (Spring Fuchsia)

March 30, 2010

I use it for my iPhone. It just fits, and the case is very form fitting.I also have a thin polycarbonate case for it. CaseCrown iPhone 3G Soft Polycarbonate Slim Fit Case – Black

I couldn’t find something like this that was made for the iPhone, most of them were for the iPhone without a case on the back.

I don’t think it would work well as a camera case, unless you have a very thin one. The iPhone is much thinner than most compact cameras.

But, for the iPhone, I love it.

Review of Sterlingtek’s NIKON EN-EL1 Equivalent Camcorder/Digital Camera Battery

March 29, 2010

I bought a couple of these Nikon EN-EL1/Konica Minolta NP-800 equivalent batteries for my Konica Minolta A200 camera. Their performance is simply terrible. The OEM NP-800 (rated at 800mAh) can take 150 – 200 photos, but the SterlingTek can only take a few dozens. I didn’t bother to return them because of the hassle and shipping charges.

If you want to use third-party batteries, try Lenmar or Ultralast. I have used them on my Sony Alpha A100 and Panasonic Lumix LX2. The performance has been great from these brands.

Product Description
Guaranteed to work with the following Cameras:Nikon Coolpix 775 Nikon Coolpix 880 Nikon Coolpix 885 Nikon Coolpix 995 Nikon Coolpix 4300 Nikon Coolpix 4500 Nikon Coolpix 4800 Nikon Coolpix 5000 Nikon Coolpix 5400 Nikon Coolpix 5700 Nikon Coolpix 8700

Review of Sekonic L-358 Flash Master Light Meter

March 29, 2010

This Sekonic L-358 light meter is an excellent meter. I have fallen in love with it. Lots of Today’s 35mm SLR camera meters are TTL Meters (reflected light measurement meters). Sekonic L-358 is such a high precision instrument which measures incident, reflected, flash (cord & cordless). I got great digital photos after I have used the reading on 2 different cameras under normal & Flash lights.

The pictures are great out of your camera and do not require any editing if used properly according to the instructions. I like the built in Memory function to store readings, Shutter Priority, Aperture Priority, 2 ISO functions, Weather proof Seal, Can include optional radio transmitter + receiver modules to wirelessly trigger flash units, So far Battery Life has been Good. This meter does not use “AA” it uses CR-123A so you will have to always carry one spare with you.

Product Description
Since its introduction, Sekonic’s L-358 Flash Master has become the best-selling digital flash meter in its class. Weather-sealed against the nastiest of working conditions, the L-358 delivers dead-nuts accurate flash and ambient light reading in both incident and reflected modes. For mixed lighting scenarios, the L-358 displays the combined exposure values of both flash and ambient light sources, including the percentage of flash in total exposure in 10-percent increments. Dual ISO buttons allow for quick exposure factoring when working with two differing film speeds, film and Polaroids, or other situations where comparison readings are desired.
